Investing in a kitchen renovation has long been considered a good financial investment, as an updated kitchen generally increases the value of your home. Updating your kitchen and making it work for you can also have health benefits according to the Houzz study. 33 percent of the 2700 hundred home owners surveyed, who completed a kitchen renovation, say the project prompted them to "cook more meals at home, eat less takeout, and consume more fruits and vegetables."

The many choices in kitchen renovation can be overwhelming, but designing your renovation around your lifestyle is the best bet. You don't need to launch a full renovation to see improvement. Updates can be as simple as changing colors, re-organizing and adding function with accessories or as complex as a full tear out and re-build. Whatever your plan, here are some ideas to get you started:

Study your existing kitchen and think about how you use it and how you would like it to work better. Are your appliances laid out correctly? Do you have enough storage? Are there tasks that you dread because you don't have the appropriate space or tools? Could you use an island for more surface space? Is there wasted space that could be utilized better?
